The White Pine Trail offers miles of paved biking and hiking just a short ride from Sunrise Lake. Here is what to expect and where to stop along the way.
The Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park is one of Michigan's premier rail-trail conversions, stretching 92 miles from Grand Rapids to Cadillac. Located just a few miles from Sunrise Lake Family Campground, it is the perfect day trip for cyclists, hikers, and anyone looking to explore the beauty of rural Michigan at a slower pace.
The trail is easily accessible from the campground. Head north toward Cadillac to pick up the trail, where you will find well-maintained paved surfaces ideal for road bikes, hybrids, and even strollers. The section near Cadillac is particularly scenic, running alongside lakes and through quiet woodlands.
The White Pine Trail follows the path of an old railroad corridor, meaning the grade is mostly flat and gentle. This makes it accessible for riders of all fitness levels. Along the way, you will pass through small towns with charming cafés, ice cream shops, and rest stops. The trail is open year-round, with cross-country skiing and snowmobiling permitted in winter months.
For adventure cyclists, the Lake Erie Connector on the cross-country Northern Tier Route passes nearby. This epic route runs from Washington state to Maine, and Sunrise Lake makes an excellent stopover point. We welcome touring cyclists looking for a comfortable place to rest, shower, and recharge.
Bring plenty of water and snacks — while there are towns along the route, some stretches are remote. A basic repair kit with a spare tube, pump, and multi-tool is always a good idea. Michigan weather can change quickly, so check the forecast and dress in layers.
After your ride, come back to the campground for a refreshing swim in the lake, a hot shower in our clean bathhouse, and a relaxing evening by the campfire. Plan your stay at Sunrise Lake and make the White Pine Trail part of your next adventure.
